Where to Buy Binoculars

The need to buy binoculars is sufficiently uncommon that it’s not surprising that people might wonder where they could buy them. Of course, being able to buy a pair of binoculars is hardly the same as being able to buy a good pair of binoculars.

This is the most important piece of advice you can consider if you ever wish to get a pair of binoculars: do not get them from departmental stores. Much like telescopes, the binoculars you usually find in department stores tend to be studded with spurious claims of 600x magnification and other such exaggerations, when in truth what is being sold is little more than Christmas trash; i.e. cheap gifts given by the insincere on Christmas to make it seem as though they care. Furthermore, the staff in most department stores know next to nothing about the products they’re selling, especially esoteric items like binoculars, so they won’t be much help in picking out a pair that suits your needs. Worse, they might deliberately try to fob off a piece of shoddy work on you.

A much better alternative is to go to a dedicated telescope shop. Those usually stock binoculars as well, and the staff there will tend to know their wares. You won’t find the incredible claims department stores make in a telescope shop, but what claims they do make can usually be fulfilled. In addition, the employees at a telescope shop can tell you exactly what functions and features you’ll need on your binoculars for a certain purpose, and they certainly won’t try to cheat you out of your money. After all, small businesses (which most telescope shops are) run on word of mouth, and if they manage to interest you in the hobby , they’ll definitely want to be the ones selling to you if you decide to upgrade.

The internet is also a good place to buy binoculars. A simple web search can turn up hundreds and thousands of results for “tips for buying binoculars”, for instance. Most internet vendors also include user feedback for their products, which may help you decide which one you ultimately want to get. In the end, however, there is no substitute for experience when it comes to learning about which binoculars to get and where to get them from. Ask a friend who’s experienced in this sort of thing to help you out, and take notes, so that you can do it on your own next time.
